Both TPE and TPR belong to thermoplastic elastomer. At present, there is no defined standard in the elastomer industry. In a broad sense, TPE and TPR are general terms for elastomers. However, from the narrow point of view of the TPE industry, there are still some differences between TPE and TPR.

TPE is generally modified with SEBS as the base material, and TPR is generally modified with SBS as the base material. SEBS is the product of SBS hydrogenation (the so-called hydrogenation refers to the introduction of hydrogen atoms into the molecules of unsaturated molecules under special reaction conditions, so as to make the molecular structure saturated). SEBS has saturated molecular structure, and its aging resistance, yellowing resistance, temperature resistance and corrosion resistance are better than SBS. Similarly, the related performance of TPE is better than TPR.

Specific differences between TPR and TPE:

1. Distinguish from smell: TPR usually tastes stronger than TPE, and TPE can even be odorless.

2. Glossiness: TPR is usually more shiny than TPE, and the surface looks shiny.

3. Combustion: TPE raw materials usually have a stable flame, emit white smoke, taste like candles, and the burned area is very sticky after burning; The flame of TPR raw material jumps after burning, emits black smoke, and the smell is pungent. The burned place is not sticky;

4. Processing temperature: generally, TPR can be thermoplastic processed at about 150 ° C, while TPE needs to be thermoplastic processed at about 180 ° C, depending on the molecular weight. If the molecular weight is high, the processing temperature needs to be higher.

5. Weather resistance: SEBS is the product of SBS hydrogenation, and the weather resistance of TPE is better than that of TPR.

6. Glue coating: Generally, TPE raw materials can be coated with PP, while TPR cannot be coated with PP

7. Stickiness: generally, TPR is easier to feel sticky than TPE
